Draft of the school magazine front cover

This is a draft of my school magazine's front cover, is in Southfield school's colours: red, white and green. The masthead including the title is the name of the social media name. Therefore you could search it and be more in contact with the school. The logo is the Southfield rose is in the colour red and stands out from the rest of the front cover.

By saying the 'Leavers prom' photos are inside this entices the reader to want to buy the magazine and read  on. By selecting a 'Star student' this encourages other student to want to be 'star student' and helps the star student gain self- confidence. By putting pictures on the front cover it attracts the students, teachers and parents to want to see inside the magazine and who's in it.

The timeline is helpful to the students because it tells the students what is happening this week therefore they won't forget. This is an easy and simple way of showing events. The barcode and price is on the bottom left, this is clear to the reader how much the price is. There is a small Southfield rose logo.

The next picture is of a new A-level student this shows a range in students because the first student is a Year 7 and the second picture is an A-level student. The trips shows that the school offers more educational programs to outside of school as well. There is a cartoon globe to entice the younger students. In smaller font they say what the next trip to make students and parents aware and can sign up as soon as possible.

David Carson

He was best known for magazine design, especially he was artistic director for 'Ray Gun', he worked on the layout style of 'Ray Gun'. The alternative music magazine was published in 1992. Carson attracted new admirers to his work through working on 'Ray Gun'. he was mentioned in 'The New York Times' in 1994 and 'Newsweek' in 1996. 'Newsweek' said he "changed the public face of graphic design".

Ray Gun was first published in Santa, California.  The result from the magazine was a chaotic, abstract style, not always readable, but distinctive in appearance because of how different it is. Even though it didn't sell many copies for example it sold over 70 copies from 1992 to 2000. But people say that “he changed the public face of graphic design” and “the art director of the era”.

In my opinion, David Carson is very creative and abstract through the design of the Ray Gun music magazine. It stands out from the other magazines on display and reflects the music genre in the design. This could influence other magazines to be more artistic.

However, the readers can get confused on what David Carson is trying to portray and can be over the top. In some ways the magazine can be not readable and is hard to find because it never looks the same. Therefore I prefer other magazines to David Carson's magazine because it is easier to read and straight forward.

The 4F's

When it comes to designing a magazine you have to think about your target audience and whether it appeals to them. By using the 4F's helps you create a successful magazine. The 4F's are:
  • Format
  • Frame
  • Formula
  • Function
Format is the magazines overall look including the logo, coverlines, size of the magazine and headings.

Frame is the standard size with margins and gutters. Certain magazines use the same margins and layout.

Formula is the overall magazines approach to editorial content. Which includes the feature type, length, what's on the front and back of the magazine and the style of photography.

Function is what the magazine wants to achieve and the message it's trying to put across to the target audience.

The format of the magazine is, the masthead is behind the picture of the rapper A.K.A 'T.I 'this shows this is a very popular magazine because people can see it is a 'Vibe' magazine without seeing the title. It's in red to make the title still standout and show it is still 'Vibe' magazine. The cover lines are on either side of the picture telling you what's inside the magazine. The writing is in both lower case and capitals, the capitals make it stand out.

The barcode is down the left side of the magazine. The colour theme is blue, red and white, the hat matches the background. T.I is giving eye contact to the camera this makes the reader be welcomed and wanted, this makes them want to buy it. The target audience is mainly teenagers into R&B music and the clothes the rapper is wearing makes people want to buy it.

School Magazine Analysis

The logo is the badge for the school and is in school colours (green and yellow). It is in the top left corner next to the title.

The main image covers the whole of the front cover therefore it draws attention to the children and how happy and positive they look. This is a good picture to portray the school to show children having fun whilst learning.

The smaller images show some of the things the school does. The small images draw the attention of the reader and makes them ant to see more pictures.

The cover lines briefly tells you what is inside the magazine and usually persuades you to buy it and read it. It describes the schools achievements in a few words.

The masthead is the name of the school and is at the top of the cover. The font is in white and larger than the rest of the writing to make it stand out from the rest of the magazine cover and clearly portray what school they are. The writing says the school name and magazine issue number 13.

Conventions

Conventions are in every piece of media and they are features that you expect on every media. They use conventions in order to sell the magazines to the target audience.

Here are some conventions you will find in a magazine:
Dateline:a line of the newspaper article showing the date and place where it was wrote.

  • Model credit: is usually either on the front cover or contents page and it credits the model or photographer.
  • Left Third: the left third of the front cover shows shop sales/offer at the moment and makes people want to buy from the shop.
  • Masthead:The title of a newspaper or periodical as it appears across the first page, front cover, or title page of each issue.
  • Cover lines: is a short paragraph found on the front cover telling you what you will find on the inside of the magazine. They use this to make the reader buy and read the magazine.
  • Main Image: it's on the front page and is usually of a celebrity/model which entices the target audience.

Music Genres

There are many genres of music played all around the world and used in all sorts of ways. It's used in adverts, films, dance and some people use music to express their feelings. Music can bring people together in communities and countries, for example national anthems and gospel music.

  • Rock
  • Techno
  • House
  • Dubstep
  • Blues
  • Jazz
  • Rap
  • Country
  • Classical
  • Opera
  • R&B
  • Hip-hop
  • Pop
  • Dance
  • Indie
  • Metal
  • African
I listen to many different genres depending on my mood. I like pop, R&B, rap and hip-hop because they are usually very uplifting songs and it puts me in a positive mood. In particular I like chart music because the charts are always changing and are played everywhere. I love the artist 'Ed Sheeran' because his raps are to soft music therefore you can sing along easily and hear what he is saying. He sings about past experiences and is very inspiring.
